Big Brothers Big Sisters has officially kicked off its new Neighborhood based program in Hammond, IN. The program started with six, high quality matches between kids and volunteers in the community, and hopes to expand to 20 matches total before summer.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago has moved into Northwest Indiana and set up shop and Frank O’Bannon Elementary School. Big Brothers Big Sisters program in Hammond is an onsite mentoring program between screened volunteers and youth in the community. The program’s first session was on February 4th, and despite the snowstorm, all six matches were able to attend. During program sessions, matches are able to talk, participate in fun and exciting match building activities, as well as have access to the gym to participate in active sporting activities during their free time. Sessions are organized by a Big Brothers Big Sisters Program Coordinator, who is present all sessions to facilitate the program. The program intends to run through the summer and be a yearlong opportunity for all youth in Hammond who are able to participate.
